In 1935, Hanston went 9-0 and held its opponents scoreless. They defeated McCracken (6-0); Burdett (6-0); Garfield (7-0); Ness City (26-0); Spearville (53-0); Dodge City (49-0); Bazine (7-0); Cimarron (66-0); and Jetmore (13-0); for a total of 223-0!  Some of the names mentioned were Miller, Croft, Hann, Abbott, Halling (Back), Koontz, Halling (End), Gleason, Salmans, Mathis, Korf, Bowie, Shaw, and Kuhn.

Burdett Captures First in Tri-County Track Meet

BURDETT - Burdett High School captured first place in the annual tri-county track and field meet held here.  The winners counted 43.1 points.  Other schools finished as follows:  Jetmore, 40.6; Rozel, 16.8; Hanston 16.5.  Placing for Hanston include:  Hahn (3rd in 880 Yard Run); Snow (1st in 1 Mile Run with time of 5:26); Hanston (3rd in 1/2 mile relay); Korf (tied for 3rd in Pole Vault); Hann (2nd in Shot Put); Korf (1st in Discus with throw of 110' 10 1/2"); Mathis (3rd in Discus).

Hanston to Defend Tri-County Title

HANSTON - Basketball prospects aren't as bright as the hopes at Hanston, where Coach S.J. Wasinger is drilling a team to defend th Tri-County league title held for the last two years.  Porter, a forward, is the only letterman on hand.  New men are showing up well, however, and Hanston has high hopes of taking the title for the third straight year.  Teams on Hanston's schedule include:  Dodge City, Alexander, Kinsley, Spearville, Burdett, Jetmore, Offerle, and Rozel.  The Class B elimination tournament will be held at Garfield.

Jetmore surprise 15-11 victory over Burdett in the final game of the season furnished a dead-heat finish in the Tri-County basketball league race.  Burdett and Jetmore share the championship with Rozel and Offerle tied for third, far behind.  All league teams are now preparing to enter district tournaments next week.

HANSTON - Hanston scored an easy 37 to 0 victory over Kismet of the Little Six League in a six-man football game here.  George Abbott scored three touchdowns, Pete Burkhart 2 and Al Burkhart one.

Coach Jim Holmes reported that there are 19 boys out for football.  They include:  Laverne Houseman, Donald Brown, Dale Storm, David Schlup, Dennis Rehmert, Erin McBee, Neldon Hubin, Jim Cure, Nolan Salmans, Neil Salmans, Larry Querbach, Donald Dixon, Leo Ziesch, Dennis Seaman, Michael Laundry, Lawrence Korf, Robert Klein, Melvin Halling, and Kenneth Cure.  The first game will be a 6 man game vs Bloom at Hanston at 7:45.

*Hanston did win that game 13-0.  The next week Hanston defeated Rozel 19 to 18 in a 50-50 6 ball contest.

50-50 Coaches Favor Burdett

Coaches in the 50-50 League favor Burdett to win the title again this season and rate Windthorst a close second.  Five of the six coaches cast ballots on how they figured the league would finish.  However, they did not their team in the order of finish.  Teams receiving first place votes received six points, second five points, and etc.  Burdett totaled 23 points, and Windthorst 21.  Coaches voting were Jack Denison, Rozel; Jim Maskus, Hanston; Herb Greenstreet, Windthorst; James Sackrides, Spearville, and Mark Edwards, Burdett.  Here's how the voting turned out:  Burdett (23 pts.), Windthorst (21 pts.), Rozel (17 pts. ), Spearville (16 pts.), Hanston (13 pts.), and Offerle (10 pts.)

SPEARVILLE - Spearville scored its third straight victory here Friday with a 26-7 eightball cierdict over Hanston.  The two 50-50 League teams.  Roth scored three touchdowns for Spearville and Mellecker one.  Hornung added the three extra points.

 

Cure Sparks Hanston Win

HANSTON - Kenny Cure raced 10 yards with three minutes left in the game to give Hanston a 14-8 victory over Kingsdown here Friday night.  Kingdtown was leading 8-6 before Cure spoiled things for the visitors.  Cure scored Hanston's first touchdown in the third quarter on a 25 yard trip.  Neil Salmans dropped kicked the two extra points after the final touchdown.

 

Burdett Handles Hanston in Loop Contest, 21-6

BURDETT - The Burdett Tigers turned back Hanston, 21-6 here Friday in a 50-50 League eightball battle.  Burdett enjoyed a 14-0 halftime lead.  The defending league champions tallied seven points the last half while Hanston was counting six.  Orel Schadel counted twice for Burdett on runs of 12 and 5 yards.  Stanley Hinneragardt sped 45 yards to score the other touchdown.  Gerald Cooksey scored th three extra points.  Lois scored Hanston's touchdown in the fourth period.

Rozel Racks Hanston, 39-25 In 50-50 Eightball Clash

ROZEL - Rozel chalked up a 39-25 50-50 League eightball triumph over Hanston here Thursday night.  It was the second league win for Coach Jack Denison's crew and gave Rozel an overall 3-2 record.  Darryl Franz flashed 80 yards with a kickoff for the longest touchdown run of the evening.  The Rozel back also scored two more touchdowns on runs of 10 and 15 yards.  Gary Wilson posted two touchdowns on runs of 10 yards, and Danny Blake sprinted 15 yards for another Rozel TD.  Franz and Wilson scored the extra points.  Neil Salmans counted twice for Hanston on runs of 15 and 5 yards.  Korf posted two counters on runs of 30 and 25 yards.  Salmans scored the extra points.

HANSTON - Hanston defeated Bazine, 63-51, here Tuesday night n a "foul contest".  Officials called 59 fouls and six Bazine players left the game with five fines.  Bazine finished the clash with only three players.  Hanston lost two players via the foul route.  Bazine had 34 fouls and Hanston 25.  Scoring for Hanston included:  Korf (10), Brown (8), Cure (13), Halling (2), Salmans (12), Landry (13), Howe (2), and Archer (3).  Hanston won the B game 36 to 30.

HANSTON - Hanston upset Rozel 13-12 here Friday night with a touchdown in the last quarter.  Rozel held a 12-7 lead going in the fourth quarter.  Rozel, defending 50-50 League champs, scored touchdowns in the second and third quarters.  Hanston added its other TD in the third period.

HANSTON - Spearville nailed Hanston 35-20 , here Friday in a 50-50 League game.

 

Windthorst Knocks off Hanston, 46-13

WINDTHORST - Windthorst toyed with Hanston here Friday night in a 50-50 League game.  The locals blasted the visitors, 46-13.  Windthorst lead 39-6 at halftime.  George Horning, was the big gun for Windthorst with 32 points.  Dean Howe scored twice for Hanston.  Windthorst rolled up 382 yeards rushing.

HANSTON - Burdett came from behind in the last half to nip Hanston 35-26, here Friday night.  Burdett trailed 14-9 at halftime.

The Score Was What?

HANSTON - Windthorst's  Blue Jays ran wild spelled w-i-l-d past Hanston here Friday night in a 50-50 League game.  The, was 95-18.  Coach Herb Greenstreet's first team played only part of the first quarter and only on two plays in the second half.  Ten different boys scored touchdowns for Windthorst.  Officials lost all track of first downs, yardage gained and other statistics as fans witnessed one of the highest scoring football games perhaps ever played in Western Kansas high school history.  Greenstreet estimated that the Bluejays ran for about 200 yards in the first half and about 450 in the second half.  he said he had played every boy on the team by the end of the first half.

 

Burdett Dumps Hanston, 48-7

BURDETT - Burdett swamped Hanston 48-7 here Friday night in a 50-50 League encounter.  Wells scored five touchdowns for the winners, and added two extra points.  Burdett romped to a 20-0 first quarter lead and scored in every quarter for the victory.

 

Spearville Harpoons Hanston by 53-6 Edge

SPEARVILLE - Spearville ran wild past Hanston here Friday night in a 50-50 League game, 53-6.  It was the fourth straight win for the hosts.  They built a 21-0 halftime lead and never were threatened.  Touchdowns were racked up by Imel, Jensen, Gleason, Don Klenke, Hays and SankoWinget scored for Hanston in the final quarter.

HANSTON - Offerle managed a last quarter touchdown here Friday night to down.  Hanston 6-0 in a 50-50 league game.

Spearville vs. Hanston

SPEARVILLE - A scoring parade in the first half put wheels under the Spearville offense and the home team produced a 47-26 50-50 League victory over Hanston.  David Hays tallied four times for the winners and Glen Stegman added two TD's.  Hays longest run was for 25 yards while Stegman sped 62 yards for his longest score.  Jim Wilson and Gary Winget reached paydirt  twice for the losers.

Windthorst Is Winner 20-13 In Last Minute

WINDTHORST - A 35 yard pass in the final minute by Dennis Hornung for a touchdown gave Windthorst a 20-13 win over Hanston in a 50-50 League game.  Windthorst had an early lead on Hornung's pass to Joe Strecker covering 9 yards.  Hanston scored on a run by Nyle Salmans of 17 yards and went ahead on a one yard plunge by Jams WilsonWilson added the point after.  Windthorst tied it up on a pass from Hornung to Strecker of 17 yards and then in the final minute, Hornung came through with his scoring run and Strecker ran the point after.

Hanston Makes Things Sad for Burdett 45-7

BURDETT - It was a sad state of affairs for Burdett Friday night as they were beaten 47 to 7 by Hanston even though they had 188 yards rushing, seven first downs and intercepted four of Hanston passes.  They still could not make the imprtant drives that would make the points.  D Slavin did save the team pride by making one touchdown in the third quarter and Bauer made the extra point.  Hanston took the wind out the sails as they scored 20 points in the first quarter and followed it up by making 14 in the second and another 13 in the last quarter.  Ruff and Steinbring each had one touchdown and Wilson had two with Salmans taking the lead by making three for a total of 197 yards rushing for the team.

Pawnee Heights Jumps Way Over Hanston 25 - 13

HANSTON - Pawnee Heights made it one game closer to the 50-50 League Friday night by downing Hanston to the tune of 25-13.  Pawnee Heights scored twice in the second period and once each in the last two quarters while their defens held Hanston to one TD in the first of each half.  Bauer was the high scorer for Pawnee Heights by running two touchdowns and running two extra points.  Joe Colglazier scored the other touchdown for Pawnee Heights.  Hanston scored on runs by Cossman, and Ruff with Halling running the PAT.  Hanston rolled up 132 yards rushing and made 9 first downs.  Pawnee Heights made 7 new starts and rushed 103 yards.

 

Hanston Drops Windthorst 53-7

WINDTHORST - The Hanston Elks powerhoused over the Windthorst Blue Jays Friday night in a 50-50 League game by the score of 53-7.  Hanston's biggest gain over the Blue Jays was completing 9 passes with 121 yards gained while Windthorst only picked off 3 passes for 35 yards.  The rest of the game was firly even except for the score.  Hanston rushed 148 yards and Windthorst gained 131 yards on the ground.  The Elks picked up 14 first and tens and Blue Jays only made 11.  For Hanston, Ronald Ruff scored three TD's on runs of 50 yards, 20 yards, and 1 yard.  Ruff was backed up by teammate Dale Halling who made two touchdowns on runs of 5 yards and 1 yard.  Dale Cossman sprinted across for a counter from 13 yards out for the Elks.  One of the Elks passes went for a touchdown when Dan Aistrup passed to Steve Hastings for 48 yards.  Hanston's other TD was marked up when Jay Salmans scooped up a lost ball and ran for 44 yards.  Don Base ran 1 extra point and Halling ran 4 PATs.  Windthorst's only mark on the score board was in the final period when Bob Konrade dashed over for 11 yards and backed it up by running the point after touchdown.

Hanston Elks Blast Ingalls

HANSTON - Hanston's Elks defeated Ingalls by a 18-13 here Friday night in a non-conference 8 man football battle.  Hanston had beaten Bazine (14-7) and Hudson (21-0) while losing to McCracken (52-7) and Pawnee Rock (54-14).  Halfback Don Base scored on runs of 35 and 6 yards for Hanston.  He passed to end Terry Salmans for three other scores:  27 yards, 9, and 50.  Quarterback Dale Cossman (1 yard) and halfback Danny Aistrup (6 yards) ran for the other Elk scores.  Base ran for five conversions and Cossman passed to end Joe Hahn for another.  Hanston converted six of its seven touchdowns.  Ingalls scored in the late first quarter on a 5-yard end run by quarterback Ronnie Barnes.  Halfback Greg Meng missed on run for point.  Ingalls trailed just 14-6 at intermission.  In the final stanza, Barnes swept left end for a 50-yard scoring jaunt.  Meng converted via run.  It was Hanston's Homecoming.  (The score was actually 48-13.  The write-up said 18).

Also from the 1966-67 Hanston Elk Yearbook:  The Elks finished with a 4 - 12 record.  Wins were over:  Bison, Spearville (2 games), and Windthorst, Their losses were to Spearville, Lewis, Bazine (2 games), Ford, Pawnee Heights (2 games), McCracken,(2 games), Windthorst, Ensign, and Byers.  A Team members included:  John Ewy, Jay Salmans, Ron Ruff, Steve Hastings, Alan Steinmetz, Dale Cossman, Don Base, Brian Archer, and Terry Salmans.  Head Coach was Vernon "Buddy" Bender.

 

From the  the last 50-50 basketball tourney program l. This tournament, which was an A & B tourney, was held at Spearville High School January 24, 25, 26, and 27 of 1967. Admissions for the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday games was: Adults 75 cents; Students 50 cents. On Friday: Adults $1.00 and Students 75 cents. Participating teams were Bazine (although I'm not sure they were a member school), Hanston, Pawnee Heights, Windthorst, and Spearville. In the A Team Bracket Spearville defeated Pawnee Heights in the play-in game. Windthorst defeated Hanston, Bazine defeated Spearville. For third place Spearville defeated Hanston and in the Championship game, Bazine defeated Windthorst. In the "B" bracket, Hanston defeated Bazine in the play-in game. Windthorst defeated Pawnee Heights and Spearville defeated Hanston. Hanston defeated Windhorst for third place and Pawnee Heights defeated Spearville in the Championship Game. A team members for Hanston were: Brian Archer, Randy Ford, Ron Byrum, Dale Cossman, John Ewy, Steve Hastings, Melvin Sebes, Ron Ruff, Jay Salmans, and Terry Salmans. B team members were Dan Aistrup, Jack Bamberger, Don Base, Dean Byrum, Joe Hahn, Eric Halling, Mike Housman, Charles Osborne, Gary Dixon, and Clyde Wade. Head coach was Vernon Bender (Baker University) assisted by Jack Doll (Kansas State College at Pittsburg). Superintendent was W.D. Conley. Cheerleaders included: Shirley Horyna, Bonnie Conley, Jean Cossman, and Lynette Moore.

 

Hanston Elks

(1967-68)  The Hanston Elks competed in the South 50-6 League.  According to the 1968 "Elk" Yearbook, the 1967-68 football team won 5 and lost 2.  The Elks defeated Bazine, Hudson, Haviland Academy (forfeit), Ingalls, and Bison; lost to Pawnee Rock and McCracken.  Top players included Don Base (Tailback), Dale Cossman (Quarterback), Steve Burke (Center), Mike Houseman (Guard), Gary Dixon (Guard), Ike Halling (Guard), Jack Bamberger (Tackle), Dan Aistrup (Wingback), Terry Salmans (End), and Joe Hahn (End).  Coaches for the 1967-68 team were Vernon Bender and Forest Woods.

McCracken Cracks Hanston Badly

MCCRACKEN - McCracken may have stirred up the 50-6 League as they thoroughly thrashed Hanston 52-7 in a homecoming affair at McCracken.  This game may well serve notice to Pawnee Rock, the favorite in 50-6 play that McCracken is a bona fide contender.  McCracken scoring:  Higgins threw a TD pass for the first score to Klaus, Higgins ran an extra; Higgins made a three yard run for TD, ex failed; Higgins went three yards to score, ex failed; Whitis tossed the bomb to Klaus once more, Morgan ran ex; Whitis scored from eight yards out; then Whitis heaved a 57 yard pass to Klaus, ex failed; Morgan ran the last two TD's from three and four yards out respectively, ex failed.  Hanston scoring consisted of Cossman running five yards.  McCracken came up with six first downs while Hanston gout four.  McCracken attempted 13 passes connect on nine and went 124 yards by the air waves.  Hanston threw 20 times connect but four times for 31 yards.  McCracken plays at Odin next Tuesday (Oct. 3rd).

Hanston Wins Over Bison 13 to 12

BISON - Hanston and Bison played Tuesday night with Hanston winning 13 to 12. Bison gained 129 yards rushing and 98 yards passing. Hanston made 126 yards rushing and no yards passing. There were no individual scoring mentioned.

Ingalls Stages Eight-TD Parade to Shock Hanston

INGALLS - Eight touchdowns by Ingalls High here Friday night got the Bulldogs back on the winning track.  Coach Bill Mangels' club smothred the Hanston Elks 58-6 in a non-league 8-man football clash.  it was the 1970 home finale.  Ingalls closes with three road games - at Copeland Deerfield, and Moscow.  Hanston has beated only Bazine in five games this fall.  The Elks scored in the late first frame on a 22-yard run by halfback Danny Cure.   Run for conversion failed.  hanston made no other threats.  Junior halfback Steve Doll scored three of the touchdowns.  Two were on six-yard runs.  Other was on a 40-yard pass from quarterback Jerry Lopez.  Two scores were by soph halfback Ronnie Irskik:  6 yard end sweep and 26 yards up the middle.  Senior end Dennis Eichenauer  caught two scoring aerials - 40 yards from Lopez, 12 yards from sub quarterback Richard Sigley.  Soph safetyman Keith Wells scored on a 65-yard punt return.  Doll ran for two conversions, and Irsik and halfback Allen Flowers for one each.  Lopez passed to Eichenauer for one conversion.  Flowers had a non-socring 45-yard run nullified by a holding penalty in the third quarter.  The game was both Homecoming and Fathers Night.  Senior Carol Herman was crowned queen before the game started.

COPELAND - Hanston High's Elks scored a 41-6 victory over Copeland here Friday night in a non-league 8-man football battle.  The game was close until the last period when the Elks pulled away with two touchdowns.  Hanston is now 1-1, having lost its opener to Dorrance.  Copeland defeated Weskan 22-6 in its first start.  Scoring for Hanston:  Terry Housman, 7 yard run (Tony Hann run); Mike Lee 4 yard run; Lee 34 yard run; Lee 5 yard run; Housman 48 yard punt return; Tony Hann 11 pass to Larry Hastings (Lee run); Hann 5 yard pass to Hastings (Housman kick).  Friday was Homecoming for Copeland.  Senior Toni Clancy reigned as queen. (Toni Clancy is now Mrs. Tony Hann of Hanston).

MONTEZUMA - Mike Lee scored enough points for Hanston to beat Montezuma, but he also got a lot of help from his teammates as Hanston beat Montezuma 44-22 in a non-league game here Tuesday.  For Montezuma:  Mark McCune 25 run, (Terry Marrs run), Paul Brisco 75 kick off return, Brisco 42 pass from Jim Borth (Kevin Kinnamon pass from Borth).  For Hanston:  Mike Lee 1 run (Lee run), Lee 78 run, Terry Housman 17 pass to Tony Hann (Lee run), Housman 10 pass from Hann (pass to Hastings from Hann), Lee 31 run, Housman 9 pass from Hann (Lee run).
