Macksville Downs Pawnee Rock 26-18

PAWNEE ROCK - It was a good field and a good game, the first non-leaguer at Pawnee Rock on Friday night, but Pawnee Rock took a drubbing at the hands of the Macksville Mustangs. Macksville consolidated this year with Belpre and Radium, showed additional strength as a result of the merger. And the Pawnee Rock Braves had bad luck from the beginning when their starting halfback Lannie Unruh suffered a turned ankle that took him out of the game. Clark Moore also went out with a hurt knee but both Braves expect to be ready for next week's game with Pawnee Heights at Pawnee Rock. Scoring for Pawnee Rock was Steve Crosby who got two touchdowns on a one yard run and a 77 yard kick off return. Rick Tutak scored on a 20 yard run. For Macksville Randy Relman scored three touchdowns on a 48, a 3 and a 25 yard run. Daryl Apel scored on a 12 yard run and the two extra points were kicked by Zwink. It was a game played on the ground with Pawnee Rock laying down 250 yards rushing to 212 yard by Macksville. In the air, Pawnee Rock only had 6 yards to 10 for Macksville.

 

Natoma And Cawker City Play To Tie

NATOMA - The Natoma Tigers and the Cawker City Pirates played to a 27 to 27 tie here Friday night in the season opener for the clubs in the Lincoln Branch League. John Ireland opened the game up for Natoma with a 70 yard kick off return for the first six points. Ireland passed to Workman for the extra point. The second TD for Natoma came on a 25 yard run and Ireland passed to Ziegler for the extra point. In the second quarter Ireland scored again on a one yard run but the try for the extra point here missed. In the third quarter Ireland again held the honors with a 17 yard run for the TD and he also took it over for the extra point to end the scoring for Natoma. For Cawker City Ron Koster passed to Bingesser for 63 yards for the TD in the first quarter with Pirotte getting the extra point on a run. Schlaefli scored on a 14 yard run but the extra point missed to end the first period scoring for the Pirates. In the second period Pirotte scored on a one yard run and Kuhn took it over for the extra point. In the third stanza Kuhn intercepted a Tiger pass on the 40 yard line from which he scored. Koster passed to Schlaefli for the extra point to end the scoring for Cawker City. Natoma had eleven first downs as Cawker City racked up six. In yards rushing Natoma had 249 with the Pirates 199. The Tigers had 154 yards passing and Cawker City 146. Natoma goes to Quinter next week for an eleven man game.

 

Little River Downs Geneseo 13 to 0

GENESEO - In the opening Quivera League game of the season Friday night, the Geneseo Dragons suffered a bad defeat from the Little River Redskins, 13-0. Scoring for Little River were Myers on a one yard run and Brockleman on a 40 yard pass from Myers. Brockleman suffered a possible rib injury but its seriousness was not known at press time.

 

Schoenchen 31, McCracken 24

MCCRACKEN - Schoenchen ran past home team McCracken Friday afternoon by a score of 31 to 24. Schoenchen TD's were made by Stremel on a 5 yard run and a 35 yard run. R. Klaus ran a short 1 yard TD and backed it up with an extra point. R. Klaus passed a 50 yard touchdown to Bickle. J, Klaus received a one yarder for the last touchdown. McCracken made their scores on two one yard runs by Whitis. Whitis passed 9 yards to Mike Peters and Terry Peters ran 2 yards for the other TD. Schoenchen had 8 first downs, McCracken had 8 also. Schoenchen attempted 22 passes and completed 11 while McCracken attempted 15 passes and completed only 5.

 

Cimarron Over Jetmore 18-13

JETMORE - The Cimarron Bluejays defeated the Jetmore Longhorns 18-1 in a non-league game played at Jetmore Friday night. Jetmore's Seybold scored both touchdowns for the longhorns on passes from quarterback Driscoll. The first score came on a 24 yard toss to Seybold from Discoll and the second was a long 55 yard touchdown pass. Seybold ran the ball for the extra poing. Both Jetmore scores came in the first quarter. Cimarron was held scoreless until the third quarter, when Lacy took a 5 yard pass from Coast and carried it over. The run for extra point was not good. In the fourth period Coast sneaked over from the one and a few minutes later Escram scampered 35 yards when he picked up a blocked kick. The try for extra point was not good. Jetmore, a member of the WKEA meets Kinsley at Jetmore next Friday night in another non-league tilt. The Longhorns open league play at Tribune on Sept. 30.

Pawnee Heights Rally Upends Pawnee Rock 27-7

PAWNEE ROCK - The new Pawnee Heights High School Tigers really really rocked the Pawnee Rock Braves, Friday night by the score of 27 to 7. Pawnee Rock started out with a touchdown in the first period on a one yard plunge by Steve Crosby and he backed it up with running an extra point. The Tigers of Pawnee Heights held the Braves, in a tough defensive battle in midfield to go to the locker room trailing 7-0. The Tigers came back on the field and really tore into the Braves by making 13 points in the third quarter and 14 points in the last period. Rod Bauer ran 25 yds, 2 yds. and received a 29 yard pass from Joe Colglazier for three TD's. Joe Colglazier ran 40 yds for the other for the other touchdown for the Tigers. Bauer ran 2 extra points and Roger Crotinger ran the other PAT. The Tigers went to the air 165 yards on 7 connections, and rolled up 7 first downs. The Tigers rushed 59 yards. The Braves rushed 46 yards, and only made 6 first downs, and connected 3 throws for 61 yards. This was a non-league conflict game in 8 man football. Pawnee Rock's next game is with Hudson, next Friday night in South 50-6 play. This will be the Braves Homecoming game.

Gorham Drubs Bison 47-15

GORHAM - Gorham's Oilers won their first game of the season aftr three losses by trampling Bison 47-15 in a non-league encounter Friday night. The Oilers started early with Larry Mike recovering a fumble in the endzone; then Roger Herman scored on a seven yard run with Butler running the point; and Butler completing the scoring for the first period. Herman scored in the second quarter when he pounced on a loose ball in the end zone which had been fumbled by one of his teamates. Schon passed to Butler on a 30 yard scoring play and to Herman for a 25 yeard score in the third quarter. Herman ran six yards for the final tally in the last quarter. Butler ran three points after and Herman one. Gary Schultz and Jim Pozalek scored for Bison.

 

Otis Scores 12-0 Win Over Bushton

OTIS - Brent Kerbs threw a pass to Dan Haning covering 61 yards on the first play as Otis went on to win over Bushton 12-0 Friday night in a Quivera contest. The long pass play was the only real scoring threat by Otis until the final quarter. With 8:30 left, Terry Highfill scored on a one yard plunge. Bushton got inside the homteam's 20 yard line 4 times during the game but was held scoreless. Otis rushed 120 yards and passed for 73, while Bushton rushed for 54 yards and got 86 on passes. It was homecoming for Otis with Barbara Bahr, a senior named queen. Her attendants included Kay Wissman, freshman; Kenna Gough, sophmore; Jane Butherus, junior, and Judy Tinkel, senior.

 

Byers Hornets Sting Hudson

HUDSON - Byers Hornets broke away from a 13-13 first quarter tie and went on to sting the Hudson Wildcats 33-13 in a non-league game here. Robert Seifkes scored Hudson's first TD on a 50 yard run. The try for point failed. Later in the same period, Keith Widemer picked off a Byers' pass and raced 18 yards to score. Joe Farris ran the extra point. None of the names of the Byers scorers were available according to the reporter at Hudson.

 

Jetmore Blanks Ness City 20 - 0

JETMORE - Jetmore completed only four passes, but three went for touchdowns as Ness City was shut out 20-0 in a WKEA contest Friday night. Jetmore now has a 3-1 record. Mike Driscoll caught one pass from Mike Seybold in the first quarter for a score, the play covering 23 yards. Another Seybold to Driscoll pass in the second covered 43 yards and another score. The situation reversed in the third quarter with Driscoll passing to Seybold for 53 yards and a touchdown. Gerald Nuss and Ray Mayfield ran two of the points after. Both teams were even on first downs with 10, however Ness had the edge in rushing 140 yards to 123 for Jetmore, jetmore completed four of 16 passes for 135 yards, Ness hit two of 14 attempts for 30 yards.

 

Dodge City Annihilates Garden City By 40-0

GARDEN CITY - Dodge City's Red Demons literally annilated Garden City 40-0 in a WCKL game here Friday night. Dodge held a commanding 36-0 lead at the halfway mark. Neither team could score in the third period. Garden City's deepest penetration was no further than the Dodge 40 yard line against a light, but stubbord Red Demon defensive line. Mike Barhydt scored the first touchdown for the Demons on a three yard run. The try for point failed. Kirk Tyree scored the Demons' second touchdown on a four yard run. Mike Montgomery passed to Kenny Page from the extra point. Montgomery, who saw only limited action due to a sprained ankle, passed to Kirk Tyree for the third Demon TD. Montgomery ran for the extra point. Montegomery passed to Page for the fourth touchdown on a play that covered 23 yards. The conversion attempt failed. In the fourth period, Barhydt scampered seven yards on a handoff to score, with Killian kicking the extra point. The final touchdown came on the longest run of the game, a 64 yarder by Dennis Burkes. Killian again kicked the extra point, making the score 40-0.

* I picked this game since it featured Mike Montgomery. Montgomery who graduated for Dodge City High School, played 4 seasons (1971 - 1974) in the NFL: San Diego (1 year), Dallas (2 years) and Houston (1 year). He rushed for 297 yards (2 touchdowns) and had 835 receiving yards (7 touchdowns). He also completed 4 passes out of 10 attempts for 111 yards (1 touchdown). Montgomery punted 4 times for 158 yards. To make him complete. Montgomery recovered 5 fumbles (1 touchdown).

Pawnee Heights Jumps Way Over Hanston 25 - 13

HANSTON - Pawnee Heights made it one game closer to the 50-50 League Friday night by downing Hanston to the tune of 25-13. Pawnee Heights scored twice in the second period and once each in the last two quarters while their defense held Hanston to one TD in the first of each half. Bauer was the high scorer for Pawnee Heights by running two touchdowns and running two extra points. Joe Colglazier scored the other touchdown for Pawnee Heights. Hanston scored on runs by Cossman, and Ruff with Halling running the PAT. Hanston rolled up 132 yards rushing and made 9 first downs. Pawnee Heights made 7 new starts and rushed 103 yards.

 

Windthorst Jays Dump McCracken

WINDTHORST - Windthorst Bluejays came on strong in both the second and fourth periods as they dumped McCracken 48-18 for a successful homecoming in a 50-50 league game played here Friday night. Judy Hornung, Windthorst senior was crowned homecoming queen at halftime. John Strecker scored three times for the winners on runs of three, seven and two yards. Jerry Ackerman scored on a one yard run. Dave Torline tallied twice on passes from Ackerman. The first covered 23 yards, the second 14 yards. Bob Konrade scored on a one yard run. Konrade scored a safety when a McCracken punt was blocked into the endzone. The Mustangs tried to run the ball out and the ball carrier was downed by Konrade. Extra points were scored by Strecker, Ackerman, and Konrade, the latter accounting for two. All four came on runs. The Mustangs tallied first in the game on a 20 yard pass play from Douglas Whitis to Mike Peters. The try for point failed. Lance Morgan scored for McCracken in the third period on a one yard run. The try for point failed. In the final period, Douglas Whitis scooted 32 yards to score. Windthorst is now 2-5 for the season.

 

Pawnee Rock Routs Garfield

GARFIELD - The Pawnee Rock Braves, coached by Jerry Snyder, rolled to their third consecutive victory 52-20 over the Garfield Cardinals in a South 50-6 league game here, Friday night undter dusty, windy conditions. Quarterback Steve Crosby became a running star with touchdown runs onf 23, 4, 42, and 6 yards. Doug Weathers scored for the Braves on a 13 yard gallop. Marty Loving scoring for Pawnee Rock on a five yard run, Denny Schmidt scored on an 11 yard run, and Rick Tutak rambled 42 yards on another touchdown run. Glen Mull ran one extra point for the winners in the high scoring encounter. Terry French and Bill Keener each ran one, with Steve Crosby kicking one. The Braves failed on four extra point attempts. Garfield's Cardinals scored in the third period when Harlan Vincent broke lose on a 28 yard run. The PAT was scored on a run by George Welch. Welch scored on a one yard plunge in the final period but the try for point failed. Later in the same period, Welch ran one yard for touchdown. Vincent ran for the PAT. Garfield is now 0-5 on the season. They play Haviland Academy, Nov. 1.

*Worth mentioning is Steve Crosby. Crosby went to Kansas State and graduated from Fort Hays State. We was drafted in 1974 by the New York Giants. He played for three seasons, all for the Giants. He rushed for 54 yards in 15 carries. He caught 2 passes for 44 yards. He also ran back 3 kick off's for 61 yards. Finally Crosby punted the ball 2 times for 88 yards with the longest punt of 60.

Bison Buffaloes Down McCracken Mustangs 46-19

McCRACKEN - The McCracken Mustangs played host to the Bison Buffaloes, here Friday night, and the visitors took home a 46 to 19 victory for their traveling efforts. For the Mustangs - Terry Peters caught three passes from Whitis, one eight yards, another for 30 yards and a third for 21 yards for touchdowns. Lance Morgan scored the lone extra point for McCracken. The scoring for Bison was handled by Schultz who accounted for five for the evening with a 31 yard, 7 yard, 26 yard, 65 yard, and a seven yard run. Randle scored on a 14 yard pass from the Buffalo quarterback. Erb went over from the one. The extra points were both scored by Urban who gathered in passes on the tries. The game was deadlocked at 19 all by half time but the Buffaloes came back strong in the second half to win it to the tune of 46 to 19.

 

Bazine Finishes With 26-8 Win

BAZINE - Bazine clinched third place in the 50-50 League by waxing Windthorst 26 to 8 in their last game of the season. Bazine scored one in each of the quarters with an extra point in each of the last two periods. All of the touchdowns made for the Indians were made by G. Barricklow. Windthorst made a safety in the first period and one touchdown in the last stanza.

Hanston Drops Windthorst 53-7

WINDTHORST - The Hanston Elks powerhoused over the Windthorst Blue Jays Friday night in a 50-50 League game by the score of 53-7. Hanston's biggest gain over the Blue Jays was completing 9 passes with 121 yards gained while Windthorst only picked off 3 passes for 35 yards. The rest of the game was firly even except for the score. Hanston rushed 148 yards and Windthorst gained 131 yards on the ground. The Elks picked up 14 first and tens and Blue Jays only made 11. For Hanston, Ronald Ruff scored three TD's on runs of 50 yards, 20 yards, and 1 yard. Ruff was backed up by teammate Dale Halling who made two touchdowns on runs of 5 yards and 1 yard. Dale Cossman sprinted across for a counter from 13 yards out for the Elks. One of the Elks passes went for a touchdown when Dan Aistrup passed to Steve Hastings for 48 yards. Hanston's other TD was marked up when Jay Salmans scooped up a lost ball and ran for 44 yards. Don Base ran 1 extra point and Halling ran 4 PATs. Windthorst's only mark on the score board was in the final period when Bob Konrade dashed over for 11 yards and backed it up by running the point after touchdown.

 

Bison Buffalo

(1966-67) According to the Bison Trail, the 1966-67 football team won 3 and lost 6 finishing third in the South 50-6 league standings. The Buffaloes defeated Hudson, Garfield, and McCracken; lost to Haviland, Gorham, Bazine, Odin, Hanston, and Pawnee Rock. Football lettermen for the season were Jerry Erb, Tom Humburg, Mark Reha, Don Rothe, Bill Schneider, Gaylen Schultz, Gary Wilhelm,Terry Dalton, Bill Newhall, Dennis Pechanec, James Pozalek, Don Schneider, Bob Urban, Bert Newhall, Dana Randel, Robin Scheuerman, and Otis Serpan. Coaches for the 1966-67 team were Bud Tanking and Gary Yost.

 

According to the Bison Trail, the 1966-67 basketball squad finished with a regular season record of 11-9. Bison did take second in the South50-6 league tournament and third place in the District Tourney held at Bison. The highlight of the season was defeating Pawnee Rock who was ranked 4th in the state 41-40. Varsity Basketball lettermen for the year were Jerry Erb, Gary Wilhelm, Dennis Pechanec, Bill Tuzicka, Ken Holopirek, Tom Humburg, and Gaylen Schultz. Other team members on the Varsity included Don Rothe, and Mark Reha, This information was submitted by Coach Tanking. The Buffalo's 11 wins were against Haviland, Odin, Hudson (2), Pawnee Heights, Haviland, Pawnee Rock, and McCracken. Their losses were to Garfield (2), Hanston, Pawnee Rock, Otis, Ransom, and Schoenchen. Bison defeated Garfield to whom they lost to during the regular season but lost to Pawnee Rock in the South 50-6 league tournament. At the District Tourney they defeated Utica 73-56, lost to Bazine 79-66 in the semi-finals, and then defeated Schoenchen 71-57 to capture the third place trophy. Basketball coaches included Marion McIntyre, Bud Tanking, and Gary Yost. Bill Schneider and Don Reinhardt served as managers.

Friends Academy Topples Bison

HAVILAND - Bison Buffaloes felt the nip of Haviland Academy 21-13. Haviland built up a small lead in the first quarter 8-6 on a TD and a safety. Bison went ahead in the second quarter when they scored two TDs., 13-8. Irvin Erb went for a four and 75 yards. Haviland Academy got scoring from Jim Stockton on a pass from Nove and Ross raced five yards and Roy Laughlin recovered a safety. Bob Schaffer ran four yards for a TD and Jim Stockton added the extra point. Haviland gained eleven first downs, Bison 7. Haviland rushed for 22 yards, Bison carried for 81 yards. Through the air, Friends Academy threw 20 passes, connected on nine for eighty yards and Bison threw 17 times with four completions for fifty-nine yards.

 

McCracken Goes On 2 Game Win

BAZINE - McCracken won its second game of the season and first South 50-6 League game of the season against no losses whatsever as they climbed by Bazine 19-13.  McCracken scored 12 in the second quarter and 7 in the 4th.  Bazine scored 6 in the third and 7 in the final stanza.  No individual scoring was included in this write up.

McCracken Cracks Hanston Badly

MCCRACKEN - McCracken may have stirred up the 50-6 League as they thoroughly thrashed Hanston 52-7 in a homecoming affair at McCracken. This game may well serve notice to Pawnee Rock, the favorite in 50-6 play that McCracken is a bona fide contender. McCracken scoring: Higgins threw a TD pass for the first score to Klaus, Higgins ran an extra; Higgins made a three yard run for TD, ex failed; Higgins went three yards to score, ex failed; Whitis tossed the bomb to Klaus once more, Morgan ran ex; Whitis scored from eight yards out; then Whitis heaved a 57 yard pass to Klaus, ex failed; Morgan ran the last two TD's from three and four yards out respectively, ex failed. Hanston scoring consisted of Cossman running five yards. McCracken came up with six first downs while Hanston gout four. McCracken attempted 13 passes connect on nine and went 124 yards by the air waves. Hanston threw 20 times connect but four times for 31 yards. McCracken plays at Odin next Tuesday (Oct. 3rd).

 

Otis Makes It 3 and O in League

OTIS - The Otis Eagles had a very successful homecoming as they romped by Geneseo 48-12.  This makes Otis 3-0 for Quiveria play and Geneseo 0-2.  Team Captains were Steve Schneider and Kenny Axman.  The queen was Susie Menzer.  Scoring for Otis was Curt Carpenter twice, Tom Bahr with a TD and safety, Nuss, and Goff twice.  For Geneseo, it was W. Schmidt and M. Kratzer corssing the goal line.

Little River Stays Undefeated in Quivera League Play

LITTLE RIVER - Little River kept its hat in the Quivera crown ring as they marched over a stubborn Holyrood club by the score of 9-0.  This makes Little River 3-0 and Holyrood 2-0 in league play.  A field goal by Bob Schulte was enough for the win as he kicked it in the first quarter.  The remainder of the game was one big struggle until Schulte again scored, not with his one foot, but with both for a touchdown.

Pawnee Rock Is Victorious 69-0

PAWNEE ROCK - Pawnee Rock absolutely overpowered Haviland Academy by the score of 69-0. The Braves scored 32 points in the first quarter and never gave the soldiers a chance. Glen Mull scored three TDs on nine, four and 20 yard runs. The latter came on an intercepted pass. Steve Crosby had TDs as he went 15 yards ona pass interception and passed the other one to Doug Weathers 26 yards. Terry French ran a six yard TD, Larry Crosby crossed the stripes from 33 yards out. Marty Loving went twenty yards. Richard Daugherty ran 15 yards, Crosby made two point afters, on a run and kick. Tutak ran one. Pawnee Rock gained 178 yards on the ground while Haviland only got a minus 19 yard. Rock threw 8 times and completed half for 86 yards. Haviland threw 30 times with 7 completions for 89 yards. Thus powerful Pawnee Rock asserts itself as the best team in eight man football in these parts.

 

Spearville Defeats Macksville 21 to 14

SPEARVILLE - Spearville downed Macksville 21 to 14 in Golden Plains League play Friday night.  Mike Simmons made a 56 yard run for a touchdown with Huslig and Schawe running for the other scores.  A safety was scored in the second quarter.  Jackie McCammond was the scorer for Macksville with an eight yard run and a 35 yard punt return.  Dwayne Hogan made one extra point and McCammond passed to Weers for the other.

Holyrood Bows After Rugged Test of Otis

HOLYROOD - Otis Eagles got off to a rosy start when Bahr ran 70 yards on the first play of the game to give Otis a 6-0 lead.  But before the dust settled at Holyrood, Otis barely came away with a 19-18 win over a up and fighting Holyrood crew.  Otis jumped to a first quarter lead when Carpenter followed the Bahr act with a 20 yard pass play to Corsey.  Holyrood scored in the second quarter when H. Smith recoered a fumble in the end zone to make the halftime score 12-6.  In the third quarter Shaffer threw a TD pass to Bolin16 yards for the equalizer 12-12.  But Otis went into the end zone with Axman carrying the maid.  Carpenter passed to Tinkel for the extra point.  Holyrood came back with their own passing combo of  Shafer to Phelan 17 yards.  But the extra point failed and Otis won by a point 19-18 keeping their chances alive for Quivera title.

 

Pawnee Rock Blanks Bison

BISON: The Pawnee Rock Indians romped, tromped, and stampeded the Bison Buffaloes by a score of 53-0 Friday night in a South 56 league game. Rick Tutak paced his team with three touchdowns - 31 yards, 23 yards, and 1 yard runs. Doug Weathers ran 24 yards twice to bring home two touchdowns. Glenn Mull also scored twice, once on an 18 yard run and another time by running 32 yards. Terry French scored on a short run to complete the scoring. Extra points were made by Mull (1) and Steve Crosby (4). Pawnee Rock had 195 yards rushing and 145 in the air. Bison gained only 73 yards on the ground and 6 by passing.

 

Odin over Bazine 37-13

ODIN - Bazine and Odin met in non-league play Friday afternoon with Odin winning 37-13. Morris was busy during the game scoring all but one of Odin's touchdowns. He scored 5 TDs for 5, 15, 20, 15 and 40 yards. Leon Debes passed to R. Beren who ran 25 yards for the other TD. Barricklow made a 2 yard plunge for Bazine in the 1st quarter and Maier made the extra point. Titel made a 3 yard plunge for the their other TD. Odin completed 4 out of 10 passes and Bazine completed 6 out of 25. This was homecoming for Odin. Marilyn Kaiser was queen, her attendants were Patricia Debes, Waneta Kinzel, and Jo Ann Penka. The King was Gary Schneweis, attendants were Vernon Demel, Morris Prossser, and Leon Debes. Odin p lays Luray next Friday in league play.

Otis Wins Over Sylvan Grove

OTIS - Sylvan Grove and Otis met in non-league play Friday night, Otis won 12-7.  Scoring for Otis, Axman and KerbsKerbs scored on a pass from Carpenter

 

Brothers Lead Pawnee Heights to 20-12 Win

SPEARVILLE - Pawnee Heights continued its unblemished record at six straight as it downed Spearville 20-12 in a Rolling Plains Conference game Friday night.  It was a pair of brothers who brought about Spearville's downfall.  Heights quarterback Joe Coleglazier passed 29 yards to brother John, for the first touchdown.  Joe passed to Darrell Bryant for the point after.  John Coleglazier scored the second Heights six pointer on a two yard run with brother Joe passing to Brad Fox for the point.  Stanley Bryant capped the scoring with a one yard plunge.  For Spearville, it was Dennis Schawe scoring on a 30 yard sprint in the the first quarter and Keith Huslig plunging for the other from the one yard line.  Linda Herron was the Homecoming Queen for Spearville.

Pawnee Rock Hits McCracken 60-7 To Win League

PAWNEE ROCK - The Pawnee Rock Braves slashed the McCracken men into the ground by the score of 60-7 to caputre the Sough 50-6 championship. The Braves were led by Glenn Mull who carried the ball into the stripped zone three times on runs of one, four, and three yards. Doug Weathers crossed goal line territory twice on a two yard run and creceived a Steve Crosby pass from 16 yards. Larry Crosby ran 35 yards to pay dirt. Rick Tutak hustled 35 yards to score and Terry French rambled one yard. Mike Dunlap recovered a fumble in the end zone for a safety. Mull scored two PAT's and Crosby ran one while Tutak passed to Glen Mull. McCracken scored when Doug Whitis passed to Rich Higgins 54 yards. Pawnee Rock is probably the best eight-man team in the state.

 

Hanston Wins Over Bison 13 to 12

BISON - Hanston and Bison played Tuesday night with Hanston winning 13 to 12. Bison gained 129 yards rushing and 98 yards passing. Hanston made 126 yards rushing and no yards passing. There were no individual scoring mentioned.

 

Claflin Is A Winner At Otis 13 to 0

OTIS - Claflin's Woldcats scored in the first and last quarter to trim otis 13-0 in a Quivera League contest, Tuesday night. Ricky Oberle broke the scoreing ince with a run in paydirt in the first quarter. From then on the two teams battled on even terms until the final quarter when Doug Doll went in for six points for Claflin and McAtee added the extra point.

 

Hanston Elks

(1967-68) The Hanston Elks competed in the South 50-6 League. According to the 1968 "Elk" Yearbook, the 1967-68 football team won 5 and lost 2. The Elks defeated Bazine, Hudson, Haviland Academy (forfeit), Ingalls, and Bison; lost to Pawnee Rock and McCracken. Top players included Don Base (Tailback), Dale Cossman (Quarterback), Steve Burke (Center), Mike Houseman (Guard), Gary Dixon (Guard), Ike Halling (Guard), Jack Bamberger (Tackle), Dan Aistrup (Wingback), Terry Salmans (End), and Joe Hahn (End). Coaches for the 1967-68 team were Vernon Bender and Forest Woods.

 

The 1967-68 Basketball team finished with a regular season of 12-9 and finished first in the South 50-6 League. The 12 wins were against Spearville, Sylvia, Bazine (2), Pawnee Rock, Lewis, Haviland Academy, McCracken, Hudson (2), Haviland, and Mullinville. Their losses were to Bison (2), Ford (2), Gorham, Windthorst, Pawnee Rock, McCracken, and Bucklin. The A team squad consisted of Don Base, Ron Byrum, Brian Archer, Dean Byrum, Dan Aistrup, Gary Korf, Joe Hahn, Ike Halling, and Mike Houseman. The Elks were coached by Vernon (Buddy) Bender.

Otis-Bison Cougars Claw Wilson

WILSON - The Otis-Bison Cougars opened the 1969-70 football season with a Quivera League win over the Wilson Dragason to the tune of 12-0.  The Cougars scored their first touchdown on a 72 yard pass from Dewald to Erb.  The game stood at 6-0 throughout the first half.  Otis capped their scoring with a pass interception by Chuck Smith who rambled for 55 yards for the final touchdown.

 

Haviland Defeats Odin 32-14

HAVILAND - The Haviland Blue Dragons romped over the Odin Tigers Friday night here with a score of 32-14.  The first quarter was scoreless, but each team put on six points in the second.  But the Blue Dragons put on the pressure in the third quarter with 12 points against Odin's eight and then went on to finish off the visitors in the fourth quarter 14 to nothing.  For the home team, Brad Whitney made two run touchdowns and a 2 point conversion, Gary Ross completed two runs and Chris Ballard one run.  For Odin, Dave Klug made one run and an extra point and J.R. Beran one pass.

Bazine Whoops Over Healy 42-6

BAZINE - The warring Bazine Indians de-feathered the Healy Eagles here in a South 50-6 League game here Friday night.  Bazine's Mike Maier tore three touchdowns from the first quarter on eight, ten, and nine yard runs, then passed to Larry Schniepp for the fourth on a 27 yard run.  Two extra points came from Dennis Koerner and four from George AustinMaier came back for another four yard TD in the third quarter followed by Dennis Koerner, a touchdown on a 18 yard scamper.  Extra points failed on both plays.  Healy's lone scoring came in the fourth by Ken Poe on a 41 yard pass from Andy Johnson, extra point failing.  Bazine led rushing with 146 yards, and 50 yards passing, completing three of seven.  Healy had 81 yards rushing and 58 yards on passes, keeping three of 14.  The Indians put the Homecoming Headdress on their King and Queen Mike Maier and Lora Stieben.

 

Otis-Bison Bombs Geneseo 52-0

OTIS - The Otis-Bison Cougars bombed the Geneseo Dragons 52-0 Friday night here in Quivera League play, making this the fourth straight win for the home team.  Scoring touchdowns for the Cougars were Don DeWald, Chuck Smith, Irvin Erb and Tom Bahr.  The Cougars will meet Bushton at Bushton next Friday.

 

Cimarron Whips Pawnee Heights

ROZEL - The visiting Cimarron Blue Jays handily defeated Pawnee Heights here Friday night in a non-league game, 14-6.  After a scoreless first quarter, Rozel put on its only touchdown when Dick Kellhoff scored for the Tigers.  Cimarron pressed in for a touchdown by Gary Skidmore in the third quarter and another TD by Dick Leatherwood finished off the scoring in the fourth.  Pawnee Heights will host Macksville next Friday for its annual homecoming bout.  Pawnee made 213 yards rushing and 56 passing.  Cimarron made 164 rushing and 59 passing.
